If you’re lucky enough to have your wedding during the same day as New Year’s Eve, then you know it has to be extra special. It’s a new beginning not just for you and your couple, but also for everyone else. The new year brings closure and new hopes and expectations for the next year to come. Picking the right music is crucial for setting the right vibe. In Punta Cana this can be a bit daunting to get right, so we are here to help. In this guide we’ll go through how to plan your Punta Cana Wedding playlists during the New Year!

A good wedding playlist comes down to a gradual buildup that tells a story. Your guests will be invested in the romance earlier in the day and switch a party mood as the night falls and midnight gets closer. As long as you’re able to create good pacing that doesn’t start the party too soon, you’ll be able to have an unforgettable experience.

Setting the Mood Early Before the Ceremony

The first impression of your wedding is super important. The afternoon sunlight will create a fabulous romantic atmosphere. Guests will be arriving, taking photos and greeting each other. For this section, these are the main types of songs you’ll want to pick out:

  • Soft Instrumental Covers
  • Classical Piano
  • Acoustic versions of romantic songs
  • Light Jazz or Tropical lounge music

Find songs with lyrics that can easily blend into the background without being distracting. If you pick jazzy or more upbeat tropical music, make sure to find music that is low tempo and calming. Some jazz tracks can get intense, and you’ll want to avoid that early in the day. If you’re not a huge fan of soft music, you can find a romantic or soft cover of your favorite song. Throw it in there for a touch of uniqueness.

Ceremony Soundtrack

The ceremony is going to be the most emotional part of the day. As you and your partner make your entrances, a subtle change in music can make the moment much more dramatic. The key here is to be subtle, grabbing the audience’s attention without ruining the calm and romantic vibe. The types of music you can pick here are mostly the same as the pre-ceremony:

  • Instrumental Versions of known songs
  • Acoustic covers of songs
  • Piano or String arrangements (can be especially powerful after a pause)
  • Felix Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” in C major (You can never go wrong with this classic piece as the bride walks in)

Cocktail Hour Transition Period

Cocktail hour is when the celebrations start to ramp up. After you’ve kissed your partner and everyone cheers, a clear transition is marked between emotional anticipation and the excitement of the New Year’s eve celebration. The cocktail hour serves as an in between section for everyone to get in the right mood. Here are the types of songs you should pick:

  • Tropical House
  • Soft Latin Pop
  • Romantic Pop Songs

This is also a great opportunity to throw in some Bachata into the mix. This type of music isn’t as fast paced as merengue or salsa, and it’s got a unique poetic touch that fits perfectly into this stage of the wedding.

Reception Playlist: Warming Up the Dance Floor

Now that the reception has started, your guests are in a more celebratory mood. But remember that there are still some delicate moments before the party goes off the rails. That’s why you should have your first dance and parent dances earlier in the night. During dinner everyone will be making heartfelt toasts and speeches and having the wrong kind of vibe will take away from these. We recommend easing in with your playlist. The beginning should feature the softer and milder romantic songs, and the later moments leading up to midnight can get more intense creating hype.

For the earlier hours pick:

  • Romantic classics and modern love songs
  • Mid-tempo pop and acoustic covers
  • Soft Latin tracks that feel elegant, not club-heavy
  • Songs that work well for first dances and parent dance

As the night progresses pick:

  • Upbeat pop and crowd-favorite dance songs
  • Latin hits that get everyone on the floor
  • High-energy tracks that build anticipation
  • Familiar party anthems leading into the countdown

The Countdown: Moments Leading Up to Midnight

If you’re having your wedding at an all inclusive resort, then your reception party will end at around 10:30-11:00PM. This is because the resort will be hosting its own New Year’s main event after this time. In rare cases they’ll allow private events to have their own setup, but this requires reservation way in advance and special approval. This doesn’t mean you’re gonna lose all the hype you’ve built up though. The DJ at the event area will have an epic countdown leading up to a 15 minute fireworks show and the hardest beats of the night. These are the genres you’ll be rocking out to after midnight:

  • Latin hits
  • Pop party anthems
  • Throwback classics
  • Reggaeton
  • Electronic Dance music
  • Dominican Merengue Hits

Using Dominican Culture to your Advantage

If you are getting married in the DR, then you should pick a playlist that reflects that. Adding a few songs that reflect the culture can be an excellent way of making you feel like you’re really in a tropical paradise. Dominican music is great for getting people excited, even those who don’t usually dance will want to join in. The romantic nature of bachata is great for the earlier hours of the wedding, and Merengue and Salsa will get everyone moving.

Tips for Planning your Playlist

We highly recommend working with a DJ for your wedding. Having someone that is able to read the room and set the right vibes all throughout is really the best way to go. Make sure you talk with them about what songs you absolutely must have and which ones you’d like to avoid. Organizing them by moments and not by genre will make it easier for your DJ to execute your vision. The most important thing is to trust your DJ, they’re working at weddings all the time, and they’re experts at getting guests to be in the right mood.

Recruiting a live band is a great way to add a level of sophistication to your wedding. There’s just something so elegant about having a band play your favorite music. It makes it so much more unique to your experience as opposed to playing a recording. You can speak with your resort wedding planner about recruiting musicians. In any case it’s very important to meet up with your DJ and/or band so you’re all on the same page on what the plan for the day will be.
