Bayahibe changes depending on where you stand. One photograph may be surrounded by palm trees and clear Caribbean water. Another may be framed by the architecture and gardens of a resort. Along the village side, boats and the working waterfront become part of the landscape. In Dominicus, longer stretches of sand and resort coastline create an entirely different setting.
What makes photographing in Bayahibe different
Bayahibe sits on the Caribbean side of the Dominican Republic, and the coastline has a noticeably different visual character from the beaches around Punta Cana. Around Dominicus, clear turquoise water extends across relatively shallow sections of the shoreline. The water is often calmer than the Atlantic-facing coastline farther east, creating softer reflections and a different relationship between the beach and the sea in photographs.
The environment also changes over a surprisingly short distance. Dominicus is defined largely by its long resort coastline, while the original Bayahibe village has a smaller waterfront shaped by boats, restaurants, local businesses, and the departure points for excursions into the surrounding Caribbean.
Late afternoon brings another change. Bayahibe is known for beautiful evening light, but the exact character of a sunset depends heavily on where you are standing. Resort orientation, buildings, vegetation, clouds, and the shape of the coastline can all influence when direct light disappears. That is why we plan around the exact location rather than treating every Bayahibe beach as though it photographs the same way.
Understanding Bayahibe and Dominicus
The names Bayahibe and Dominicus are often used together, but they refer to different parts of the same destination. Bayahibe is the original seaside village. Its waterfront is smaller and more closely connected to the community, with fishing boats, restaurants, bars, local businesses, and the piers used by many of the boats traveling toward Saona Island.
A short distance away, Dominicus is the area’s principal resort zone. Playa Dominicus stretches along a larger concentration of beachfront hotels and is known for its white sand and clear, shallow Caribbean water. For most visitors, the two areas function as one destination, and the name Bayahibe is often used broadly enough to include both.
There is another naming detail that can cause confusion. Several properties along this part of the coast use La Romana in their names or marketing even though they are located in or around the Bayahibe and Dominicus area. La Romana itself is a separate city farther west. For photography and videography, the marketing name matters much less than the actual property. When you contact us, send the exact resort or venue and we can plan around where your celebration or session is really taking place.
Resort weddings in Bayahibe and Dominicus
Most destination weddings in Bayahibe take place within the area’s beachfront resorts. These properties can contain several completely different environments within the same grounds: hotel rooms and suites for getting ready, tropical gardens, beach ceremony areas, terraces, restaurants, reception spaces, and long sections of Caribbean shoreline.
That can make the entire wedding remarkably convenient, but it also means the layout of the resort becomes part of the photography plan. Two events taking place at neighboring properties can involve very different walking distances, ceremony orientations, beach access, lighting, and rules for outside vendors. Our first question is therefore always simple: where are you getting married? Once we know the exact property, we can understand the logistics before the wedding day rather than discovering them while the celebration is already underway.

Outside-photographer policies are determined by each resort. Some properties allow outside photographers and videographers, some require advance authorization or a vendor fee, and others may impose additional restrictions. These policies can also change.
If your wedding or session will take place inside a resort, tell us the exact property when you inquire. We can let you know what we know from previous experience, but any current access fee or policy should ultimately be confirmed directly with the resort. The fee, when one exists, is charged by the property rather than by HDC Photo.
Travel and transportation
HDC Photo is based in Punta Cana, and Bayahibe is one of the Dominican destinations we travel to regularly. For weddings, we plan our arrival around the venue, schedule, and coverage you have selected. For portrait sessions, the simplest option is often to photograph at or close to where you are staying, particularly when children or larger families are involved. If you would like to photograph somewhere away from your resort and need transportation to the location, we can also help arrange it for an additional fee.

Is Bayahibe the same as Dominicus?
Not exactly. Bayahibe is the original seaside village, while Dominicus is the resort area a short distance away along Playa Dominicus. In everyday travel use, however, Bayahibe is often used for the wider destination and can include both areas.
Is Bayahibe the same as La Romana?
No. Bayahibe and La Romana are separate places. La Romana is the larger city farther west, while Bayahibe is a coastal destination approximately 20 minutes away.
