Cabrera offers a different setting for a destination celebration in the Dominican Republic. Rather than being defined by a long stretch of all-inclusive resorts, much of the experience here unfolds around private oceanfront villas, secluded estates, dramatic coastline, and the quieter communities of the North Coast. A single property can become the place where everyone stays, gathers, celebrates, and spends several days together.

HDC Photo has been photographing and filming destination weddings in the Dominican Republic since 2006, including celebrations in Cabrera and the neighboring Río San Juan area. This page brings together our photography and videography in Cabrera, examples of our work, and the local knowledge that matters when planning around Cabrera, Río San Juan, Playa Grande, and the surrounding coast.

Weddings in Cabrera

Destination weddings in Cabrera often unfold differently from weddings at large resorts. The celebration may take place almost entirely within a private estate, moving naturally from bedrooms and terraces to gardens, cliffs, beaches, pools, and open-air reception spaces. Guests may be staying together at the same property or in neighboring villas, turning the wedding into several days spent in one shared place.

That changes how the day is photographed and filmed. Instead of approaching the property as simply a ceremony venue, we look at how the entire setting connects. Where each partner is getting ready. How guests will move through the property. Where the light falls later in the afternoon. Which areas become quiet once the ceremony begins. How much time is needed to move between the villa, coastline, portraits, dinner, and reception. The better we understand the property, the more naturally the coverage can move with the celebration.

Wedding photography

A villa wedding can contain many different environments within a relatively small area. The morning may begin quietly inside the house, followed by a ceremony overlooking the Atlantic, portraits along the grounds or coastline, dinner beneath the palms, and a reception beside the pool.

Our photography is built around preserving that progression. We document what happens naturally while giving direction when it is useful, particularly during portraits, family photographs, and the moments when beautiful light or an exceptional part of the property invites it. The goal is not to make the wedding feel like a photo shoot. It is to create photographs that feel considered and beautiful while still belonging completely to the celebration itself.

Wedding videography

Film adds another layer to a destination wedding in Cabrera because so much of the experience is found in movement and sound. The ocean beyond the ceremony. The words spoken during the vows. A toast during dinner. Friends laughing by the pool. Music carrying across the property once the reception begins.

Our photography and videography teams can work together throughout the celebration, allowing the day to be documented as one story while each medium preserves something different. For weddings spread across several areas of a villa or involving events over more than one day, coverage can also be planned around the complete celebration rather than only the ceremony itself.

Proposals, couples, maternity & family

Photo sessions in Cabrera

You do not need to be getting married in Cabrera to have the trip photographed. The same privacy and variety that make the area appealing for weddings also create beautiful settings for proposals, engagement sessions, honeymoons, maternity photographs, and families traveling together.

Proposal photography

A proposal can be planned around the place you are already staying or around another setting that fits what you have in mind. At a private villa, that might mean finding a quiet part of the property with an ocean view and coordinating the timing so the photographer can be in position without making the moment obvious. At another location, access, privacy, light, and transportation may become more important.

We can photograph the proposal discreetly and continue with portraits afterward, giving you both the moment itself and time together once the surprise is over.

Engagement photography

An engagement session can be part of a planning trip, a few days before the wedding, or simply an opportunity to photograph this chapter of your relationship somewhere completely different from home.

Cabrera’s villas, gardens, beaches, and open coastline allow a session to move through several environments without needing to feel overly staged.

Couples photography

Honeymoons, anniversaries, vow renewals, and simple trips together do not need a larger occasion to be worth remembering.

A couples session can be relaxed and uncomplicated, built around the two of you and the setting rather than a formal event. We will guide you when needed while leaving room for the photographs to feel natural to the way you are together.

Maternity photography

For couples visiting Cabrera during a babymoon or family trip, a maternity session can be planned around your comfort, how far along you are, and the environment where you would most like to be photographed.

Your partner and children are welcome to be part of the session, and the pace can be adapted so the experience remains comfortable rather than rushed.

Family photography

Cabrera’s large villas often bring several generations of a family together under one roof, which makes the destination especially well suited to family photography.

We can photograph the complete group while also creating smaller combinations of grandparents, parents, children, couples, and siblings. For families with young children, the session can be timed and paced around them rather than expecting everyone to fit into a rigid structure.

The destination

A different kind of destination wedding

One of the things that distinguishes Cabrera is the way a private property can become the center of an entire wedding trip. At a traditional resort wedding, accommodations, restaurants, ceremony spaces, and public areas are usually part of a much larger operation shared with other guests. In Cabrera, many couples choose villas and private estates where the people they invited become the focus of the property for several days.

The experience can begin long before the ceremony. People wake up in the same house. Breakfast turns into a morning by the pool. Friends wander between rooms while everyone gets ready. The ceremony may happen a few steps away, followed by cocktails on another terrace and dinner somewhere else on the grounds. There is less separation between the wedding and the trip surrounding it.

For photography and videography, that creates opportunities that are difficult to manufacture. People have more time together. The environments become familiar. Moments happen outside the formal schedule. The wedding day remains important, but it becomes one chapter in a larger celebration. That is one of the reasons Cabrera works so naturally for destination weddings.

Cabrera, Río San Juan and Playa Grande

Cabrera sits on the Dominican Republic’s North Coast, but the practical wedding and villa market extends beyond the boundaries of the town itself. To the west, Río San Juan is a separate coastal town with its own beaches, communities, and properties. Between and around the two are private estates, villa developments, and stretches of coastline that couples may encounter while searching for a venue. Playa Grande, one of the best-known beaches in this part of the country, lies on the Río San Juan side of the area.

For that reason, a couple searching for a wedding venue in “Cabrera” may ultimately choose a property with a Río San Juan address, while someone staying in Río San Juan may still describe the wider destination as Cabrera when planning with vendors. For HDC Photo, the exact property matters more than the label used for the destination. We provide photography and videography throughout Cabrera and the surrounding Río San Juan area, so when you inquire, send us the name of your villa, hotel, or venue and we can plan around its precise location and the logistics of your celebration.

Wedding venues and private villas in Cabrera

The properties around Cabrera are a major part of what makes weddings here distinctive. Instead of choosing between ballrooms inside large hotel complexes, couples can find estates where architecture, gardens, cliffs, beaches, terraces, accommodations, and reception spaces all become part of the wedding environment. A few properties help illustrate the range of settings found along this part of the North Coast.

Casa Kimball

Casa Kimball is a private clifftop estate designed around the idea of bringing a group together in one place. Its oceanfront setting includes terraces, a pool, and access to the beach below, allowing different parts of a wedding weekend to unfold throughout the property rather than within one designated event room. For photography, that variety means the architecture and landscape can remain part of the story from the beginning of the day through the evening celebration.

Flor de Cabrera

Flor de Cabrera combines beachfront villas with wedding settings that can extend from the sand to elevated areas overlooking the ocean. The larger collection of villas is particularly relevant for destination weddings because neighboring properties can help accommodate groups who want to remain close to one another throughout the trip. The result feels less like everyone has checked into the same hotel and more like a temporary community has formed around the wedding.

ÀNI Dominican Republic

ÀNI Dominican Republic sits on its own stretch of the North Coast along the road connecting Río San Juan and Cabrera. The property operates on an exclusive-use model, with the entire resort reserved for one group. That privacy changes the atmosphere of a celebration considerably. Rather than working around unrelated hotel guests or shared public spaces, the property belongs to the people who have come together for the event.

Castillo del Mar

Located inside Orchid Bay Estates in Cabrera, Castillo del Mar is an oceanfront villa set above the coast with expansive outdoor spaces, a secluded beach below, and a dedicated wedding chapel overlooking the water. Its combination of accommodation and event spaces allows the wedding to move between different parts of the same estate throughout the day.

Amanera and Playa Grande

Amanera is located at Playa Grande in Río San Juan rather than Cabrera proper, but it belongs to the same wider North Coast wedding corridor. Set above Playa Grande between tropical vegetation and the Atlantic, the property represents a very different environment from the private villas closer to Cabrera while remaining geographically relevant for couples exploring celebrations in this part of the Dominican Republic.

The Cabrera coast through the camera

Cabrera does not look like Punta Cana, and that difference matters visually. The North Coast faces the Atlantic. In many areas, the coastline is more irregular, with cliffs, rocky edges, coves, stronger ocean movement, and dense tropical vegetation meeting the water. Private villas are often integrated into that landscape, with gardens, terraces, pools, stonework, and architecture creating additional settings away from the beach itself.

That variety allows photographs from the same celebration to change considerably over the course of a day. A quiet portrait inside a villa can feel completely different from an image made along the cliffs a few minutes later. A ceremony surrounded by greenery has another character from portraits against open ocean. As evening arrives, terraces and reception spaces become part of the visual story rather than simply the place where the photography ends.

We do not need every photograph to contain the ocean to make a wedding feel connected to Cabrera. The destination appears in smaller ways too: the vegetation around the property, the shape of the coastline, the openness of the horizon, the architecture of the villa, and the way indoor and outdoor spaces flow into one another. Those details are what give a gallery a genuine sense of place.

Wedding weekends and multi-day celebrations

For many couples, traveling to Cabrera means asking their guests to make a real trip out of the wedding, which makes the days around the ceremony especially meaningful. Photography and videography can extend beyond the wedding day to include a welcome dinner, rehearsal, informal gathering at the villa, beach afternoon, day-after event, farewell celebration, or another part of the trip that matters to you.

The coverage does not need to look the same at every event. A welcome party may be photographed almost entirely as it happens, allowing guests to settle into the weekend naturally. The wedding day can receive fuller photography and videography coverage. A family session the following morning might be quieter and more intentional.

Together, those pieces can preserve more than the ceremony. They can preserve what it was like to bring everyone you love to Cabrera in the first place. If your celebration extends across several days, tell us what you are planning when you inquire and we can build photography and videography coverage around the events that matter most.

Getting to Cabrera and planning around your venue

Cabrera is farther from the Dominican Republic’s largest resort centers, which makes transportation an important part of planning a wedding or session here. Samaná El Catey International Airport and Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata are two of the airports commonly used to reach this section of the North Coast. The most practical choice depends on where your guests are flying from, available routes, and the exact location of your property.

Travel time can also vary considerably between villas. A property in Cabrera, a venue along the road toward Río San Juan, and a hotel at Playa Grande should not automatically be treated as the same location simply because they are all part of the same wider destination. That is why we ask for the exact villa, resort, or venue when planning photography and videography. It allows us to account for travel, access, getting-ready locations, multiple events, and any movement required during the celebration before the wedding day arrives.
