Puerto Plata brings together a side of the Dominican Republic that feels distinctly its own. The beaches of the North Coast meet a greener, more dramatic landscape, while resorts, private villas, coastal communities, and the historic city create possibilities that extend well beyond a single type of setting.

HDC Photo photographs and films weddings, celebrations, and portrait sessions throughout Puerto Plata and the surrounding North Coast. Whether you are getting married here or simply want to preserve part of your time in the Dominican Republic, this page brings together our photography and videography services and the practical details that matter when planning a session or celebration in Puerto Plata.

Weddings in Puerto Plata

A destination wedding is made up of far more than the ceremony itself. It begins in the quieter hours beforehand, moves through the people and emotions gathered around you, and eventually becomes the celebration you will remember as one complete story.

Puerto Plata gives that story a particularly varied setting. Weddings take place across beachfront resorts, private villas, gardens, and independent venues, with the Atlantic coastline and the mountains of the North Coast shaping the surroundings in a way that feels very different from the country’s eastern coast.

Wedding photography

Our approach to wedding photography balances natural documentation with thoughtful direction. We pay attention to the moments unfolding around you while also knowing when to step in, guide a portrait, organize a group, or make the most of the setting you have chosen.

In Puerto Plata, the property itself can shape the photographs considerably. A wedding inside one of the established resort areas may move between tropical gardens, architecture, and the beach without ever leaving the grounds. A private villa can create an entirely different rhythm, with getting ready, the ceremony, portraits, and the reception all unfolding within the same space.

Rather than approaching every Puerto Plata wedding in the same way, we build the coverage around the people, setting, schedule, and atmosphere of the celebration in front of us.

Wedding videography

Photography allows you to return to individual moments. Film brings back everything that happened between them. The sound of your vows, the movement of a dress in the coastal breeze, a reaction during a speech, the music beginning at the reception, and the voices of the people around you become part of something photographs alone cannot fully preserve.

For destination weddings in Puerto Plata, our photography and videography teams can work together throughout the celebration, allowing both parts of the story to be documented while keeping the experience around you as natural as possible.

Proposals, couples, maternity & family

Photo sessions in Puerto Plata

You do not need to be getting married to have a reason to be photographed here. Some sessions are planned around a moment that has been months in the making. Others happen simply because a family is together, a new chapter is beginning, or a trip to the Dominican Republic feels worth remembering properly. Our photo sessions in Puerto Plata can be planned around your resort, villa, or another location on the North Coast, depending on the type of session and the setting you have in mind.

Proposal photography

A surprise proposal depends on much more than finding a beautiful background. Privacy, access, timing, light, foot traffic, and exactly where the photographer will be when you arrive can all affect how naturally the moment unfolds.

Share where you are staying and what you are planning, and we can arrange the photography around the location and timing while keeping the proposal itself a surprise. Once the question has been asked, the session can continue into portraits of the two of you together.

Engagement photography

An engagement session can become part of your wedding experience in Puerto Plata or simply give you time together away from the schedule of the wedding day.

The North Coast makes it possible to create a gallery with a very different atmosphere depending on where you choose to photograph. A polished resort setting, an open stretch of coastline, a quieter residential beach, or one of the area’s more distinctive communities can each tell the story differently.

Couples photography

Honeymoons, anniversaries, vow renewals, and vacations all bring couples to Puerto Plata for different reasons.

A couples session gives you space to slow the trip down for a little while and create photographs that feel connected to the place you experienced together. We provide direction where it helps while leaving room for movement, conversation, and the smaller interactions that make the photographs feel like the two of you.

A babymoon can also become an opportunity to preserve a chapter that will never look quite the same again.

For maternity sessions in Puerto Plata, location and pace matter as much as the scenery. We plan with comfort in mind, particularly when heat, walking distances, or uneven beach access need to be considered. Partners and children are also welcome to be part of the session.

Family photography

Family vacations have a way of bringing together people who may rarely find themselves in the same place at the same time.

We photograph immediate families as well as larger, multigenerational groups throughout Puerto Plata. With younger children, grandparents, or a large group, we consider more than how a location looks. Walking distance, accessibility, space, and the time of day can all make the experience easier and more enjoyable.

The destination

Where we photograph in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is sometimes spoken about as though it were one compact beach destination. In practice, the surrounding North Coast includes several areas with very different environments. For photography, those differences matter. The right location is not necessarily the one with the most famous beach. It is the one that gives you the setting, atmosphere, accessibility, and experience that make sense for what you are planning.

Puerto Plata, Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada

Puerto Plata itself combines the coast with a city that has a much stronger visual identity than most Dominican resort destinations. The Malecón follows the Atlantic waterfront, while the historic center introduces colorful architecture and an urban character away from the hotel areas. Mount Isabel de Torres rises behind the city and remains part of the landscape from many points around the area.

Just east of the city, Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada form one of Puerto Plata’s principal resort zones. For weddings and sessions taking place inside these properties, beaches, landscaped grounds, tropical vegetation, pools, and resort architecture can often provide several environments within the same location.

Cofresí and Costambar

West of central Puerto Plata, the character begins to change. Cofresí is closely associated with beachfront resorts and villas, while neighboring Costambar has a more residential feel, with private homes, vacation rentals, and a quieter coastal environment.

For a photo session or wedding in either area, knowing the exact property is particularly important. Access to the beach, private grounds, and surrounding spaces can differ considerably depending on whether you are staying in a resort, villa, condominium, or residential community.

Sosúa

Sosúa sits farther east along the North Coast and feels noticeably different from Puerto Plata’s main resort districts. Its best-known beach curves around a sheltered bay, where golden sand meets clearer, calmer-looking water than many of the more exposed stretches of the Atlantic coastline. The town itself is more active and developed around the beach, while other nearby coastal settings can feel considerably quieter. For photography, Sosúa can be especially interesting when you want the North Coast without necessarily wanting the visual language of a large all-inclusive resort.

Cabarete

Continue east and the coastline changes again. Cabarete is shaped by the wind and the ocean. Its broad beach, active water-sports culture, smaller hotels, villas, condominiums, restaurants, and beach community create a setting with more movement and energy than many traditional resort areas.

That atmosphere can work beautifully for the right session, but it also means we pay close attention to wind, beach activity, and the exact stretch of coastline being considered. A location that works beautifully for one couple may not be the right choice for a family with small children or for someone looking for a particularly calm, polished setting.

What makes photographing in Puerto Plata different

One of the things that makes Puerto Plata interesting photographically is how quickly the surroundings can change. The North Coast is not defined by one endless resort beach. Golden sand, deeper Atlantic blues, tropical vegetation, mountains, established resort developments, residential communities, and the city itself all exist within the wider destination.

The light and weather have their own character as well. An exposed Atlantic beach can bring wind and movement into the photographs, while a sheltered bay or landscaped resort can feel much calmer. Even two locations only a short distance apart may photograph very differently.

That variety is precisely why we do not begin by asking which Puerto Plata location is considered the “best.” We begin with what you are planning, who will be there, where you are staying, and how you want the photographs or film to feel. From there, the location becomes part of the story rather than simply a background behind it.

Planning photography or videography in Puerto Plata

HDC Photo is based in Punta Cana and photographs weddings and sessions throughout the Dominican Republic, so Puerto Plata coverage is planned in advance around the date, service, schedule, and exact location. For weddings, send us the name of your resort, villa, or venue when you inquire. If the day involves more than one property, let us know where each part of the celebration will take place so travel and coverage can be planned properly.

Still choosing the venue? Our Puerto Plata wedding guide covers the resorts, off-resort options, packages and flights.

Resort access is another important consideration. Outside-photographer policies are set by the individual property and can vary. Some resorts permit outside photographers and videographers freely, while others require prior approval, a day pass, or an outside-vendor fee. Because policies can change, we recommend confirming the current requirements directly with your resort before booking.

For portrait sessions, we can photograph at your resort when outside-photographer access is permitted or plan the session elsewhere. If you would like to leave the property and need transportation to the session location, we can also help arrange it for an additional fee. Any HDC travel or accommodation requirements that apply to your booking will be made clear before you reserve, so there should be no surprises after the date has been secured.

FAQ

Puerto Plata photography and videography FAQ

Do you travel to Puerto Plata for photography and videography?

Yes. HDC Photo is based in Punta Cana, but we photograph and film weddings, celebrations, and portrait sessions throughout the Dominican Republic, including Puerto Plata and the surrounding North Coast. Send us your date and exact location and we can confirm availability and any travel requirements that apply.

Which areas around Puerto Plata do you cover?

Our coverage can extend throughout Puerto Plata and the surrounding North Coast, including Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada, Cofresí, Costambar, Sosúa, and Cabarete. If you are staying somewhere else nearby, send us the exact resort, villa, or location when you inquire and we can confirm the logistics.

Can you photograph us at our Puerto Plata resort or villa?

Usually, yes, provided the property allows outside photographers. Villas and private rentals have their own access requirements, while resorts may require approval, a day pass, or an outside-vendor fee. We recommend checking with the property before booking so everyone knows the access requirements from the beginning.

Do Puerto Plata resorts charge outside-photographer fees?

Some do and some do not. Outside-vendor policies are determined by each resort and can change over time. Any access fee charged by the property is separate from HDC Photo’s photography or videography services, so the resort should always be contacted for its current policy.

Can we book photography and videography together for our Puerto Plata wedding?

Yes. Photography and videography can be booked together, allowing both teams to work around the same wedding schedule and cover the celebration from their respective perspectives.

Can you help arrange transportation for a photo session?

Yes. If your session is taking place away from your resort or accommodation, we can help arrange transportation for an additional fee. Let us know where you are staying and where you would like to photograph when we plan the session.
