Is same-sex marriage legal in the Dominican Republic?

The first thing you should know is that there is nothing illegal about practicing homosexuality in the Dominican Republic. Same-sex sexual activity was decriminalized back in 1822, and there are currently no laws that specifically target people of the LGBT community. That being said, same-sex marriage is not legally recognized yet. Another thing to keep in mind, that while the law does not persecute homosexuality, there are also no laws protecting such individuals from discrimination.

This means that by travelling to Punta Cana and openly displaying affection to your partner you will not be breaking any laws. This is great, but what about social acceptance? Punta Cana is a highly diverse, tourist oriented destination. The atmosphere is more relaxed and tolerant. The locals are used to working with people from different countries and cultures.

How is Punta Cana Different From the Rest of the Country

Punta Cana could be considered its own little world operating separately from the rest of the country. The entire area, from Uvero Alto to Cap Cana, has an intense focus on tourism. Most companies that operate in the area are somehow linked to this area. This means that workers are very focused on hospitality and making sure that guests that are new to the area feel welcome, regardless of their nationality, background, or orientation.

Here are some of the things that LGBT couples can expect to enjoy without any issues:

  • Booking a single bed at resorts or Airbnbs
  • Dining together at romantic beachfront restaurants
  • Enjoying spa treatments, couple’s massages, or excursions
  • Expressing affection in public

If you’re planning to stay at a resort, you can expect the staff to be professional, friendly, and discreet. Most of the large resorts in the areas are part of large international chains, which make sure to train their employees in inclusivity.

LGBTQ+ Nightlife and Social Scene

Punta Cana’s night life is not specifically gay oriented, but all of the major clubs are highly tolerant and will be a great time. You can expect to meet other LGBTQ+ couples at these clubs. Here are some of the places you won’t wanna miss if you love to dance your butt off.

  • Coco Bongo Punta Cana: A Vegas style club with a live show, a dance floor and VIP areas. The show is the main appeal here with impersonations of iconic pop stars like Madonna and Michael Jackson.
  • Imagine Punta Cana: One of the most famous clubs due to it being almost completely inside a natural cave. Includes VIP areas and different musically themed rooms.
  • Maroca Club: The trendiest place nowadays. Also partially built around a cave, with indoor and outdoor areas. Enjoy an open bar, themed nights, and costumed entertainers.

If you’re looking for dedicated LGBTQ+ bars and clubs, and you’re willing to travel a couple hours to the capital Santo Domingo. There are plenty of options around “La Zona Colonial” (the tourist centric area of SD). Some of the ones to check out are Esedeku Bar and Fogoo Bar & Lounge. LGBTQ+ Weddings and Honeymoons in Punta Cana

Even though same-sex marriage isn’t legally recognized yet in the Dominican Republic, many couples still choose to have their symbolic ceremonies and honeymoon celebrations.

What’s a symbolic ceremony? Coming to Punta Cana to get married legally as a straight couple is legal and possible. But it comes with a lot of extra prep work and added stress. So what many straight and gay couples do is have a symbolic wedding. Here you can invite all your friends and family, dress up, walk up the altar, kiss your partner, and have all the components of a wedding celebration while taking care of the legal part back home beforehand.

That being said, there’s no better place than Punta Cana to have your wedding celebrations. Wedding planners and photography studios (like us at Huellas del Caribe) frequently work with LGBTQ couples and our staff are thoroughly trained in inclusivity.
